A flat tyre can happen at any time, whether on the motorway, in the city or in a car park. While the situation can be stressful, adopting the right reflexes allows you to manage the emergency safely.

STEP 1: SECURE THE AREA

As soon as you feel a loss of pressure or abnormal vehicle behaviour, don't brake suddenly. Slow down gradually and park in a safe place, preferably on a flat and stable surface.

• Turn on your hazard lights immediately
• Put on your reflective vest before leaving the vehicle
• Place the warning triangle at least 50m behind your vehicle (100m on motorway)
• Have all passengers exit and move away from the road

STEP 2: ASSESS THE SITUATION

Examine the flat tyre. If it's a simple puncture from a nail or screw, a repair is usually possible. However, if the sidewall is torn or the rim is damaged, a complete replacement will be necessary.

STEP 3: YOUR OPTIONS

Depending on your situation and equipment, several solutions are available:

• Tyre repair kit: temporary solution to reach a professional (max 80 km/h)
• Spare wheel: if your vehicle is equipped, you can fit it yourself
• Call a specialist breakdown service: the safest and fastest solution

STEP 4: WHAT NOT TO DO

Certain common mistakes can worsen the situation or endanger your safety:

• Never continue driving on a flat tyre: you risk damaging the rim and suspension
• Don't try to change a wheel on the edge of a motorway: it's extremely dangerous
• Don't use an anti-puncture spray if you plan a permanent repair: the product makes repair more difficult

PREVENTING FLAT TYRES

A few simple habits can significantly reduce the risk of a flat tyre:

• Check your tyre pressure at least once a month
• Regularly inspect the condition of your tyres (wear, stuck objects, bulges)
• Avoid potholes and kerbs
• Replace your tyres before they reach the wear limit
